To your point, Scott, "he" may be suffering mild remorse at supporting one friend at the expense of another. We have tried for years to advance the concept that supporting the truth, or standing by people who speak the truth, is the right thing to do. This is important for a number of reasons which many do not understand. He chose to believe that he could "hang you out to dry" (English expression I suppose) and ask for forgiveness later.
