That's what I was thinking Scott. And I have asked our Union rep about that. It isn't in the agreement but the employer is under the assumption that because there is nothing mentioned, they can do this. Nothing says they can't. But I also said nothing says they can too
You have mentioned some of the issues with biometric authentication, i.e. storage, security. On the bright side you have an AGENT (Union) to protect your interests. This assumes your agent is familiar with the legal and technical implications of this emerging practice.
Some of the things I might want to know before opting in would be: How is the data stored? What is their contingency plan when it fails? What protections are in place to prevent the data being accessed by third parties? What happens if I don't agree? What is done with the data if I'm no longer employed by the company (i.e. will the data be deleted, retained, etc.)? If a regulatory body/third party requests the data will it be made available to them?
As Scott mentioned, if you have not signed an employment contract indicating you have agreed to this practice you can decline; however they can fire you for non-compliance.
Most people will agree to this without thinking, which appears to be the default state of most humans these days. If qualified your union should be representing the interests of its constituency -- if qualified. It should also be noted that the union optimally represents the majority of its members - if no one has an issue, the union usually doesn't as well.
The last consideration should be how committed you are to not disseminating your biometric information. If you are not willing to quit your job, or have no other options, it's pretty much a non-issue.
This is great reading, while I clean the garbages I have found, in the garbages :D
Ebay customers likes it when it's clean :P
But my fingerprints might be all over these garbages, but that doesn't mean anything :/
I am buried in garbages :( ....I have so many of them garbages I could spend the next five years, 24/7, just cleaning garbages :(
I can litereally call these garbages "securities" :P
p.s. Don't try to find me, and/or PIERRE DAOUST on ebay, you will waste your time :D
Thanks Tara. What you've said is along with my line of thinking
There is nothing in place in our agreement saying they can or cannot do this. Which is why they are doing it. They say "Nothing says we can't. I told out Rep, nothing says they can either.
Our union is pretty good. They know their stuff so it will be interesting where his goes.
As for the people. Well, what can ya say really
Again thanks
Best of luck, Alan. Feel free to keep us apprised of your progress. If only a few more people think, and question what they are being asked, things change. There are significantly more followers than leaders. If you are independently wealthy your choice might be easier -- in the end though, we all have to eat.
I am not independently wealthy, I just can't stand fuckers. So I get to do stuff no one wants to do, like jumping into garbage containers so I can find garbages, clean them, and exchanging them for whatever I want/need :D
I started this years ago, when these gymnastic bills started piling up (daughters), and then piano bills and all kind of fucking bills :D
With time, you get to have these garbages coming to you, instead of you chasing them :P
And I don't have to deal with fuckers, well, not for long anyways.....
I know it's not the most sexier thing to do for a living, but I don't care how much a dentist makes, I really don't :D
The last "job" I had, it was 1999. I was making a ridiculous $90k / year as an employee... :(
Where the fuck can you go with this ? :/
I need to find something i can do to get me out of here as well. I'm learning Python at the moment (I'm hoping my brain is too) to try and give me a skill to support myself. To give myself value
Until then, here in my current job is where I am.
Python when combined with computer science training is a good start. Comparative salaries, etc. can be found here:

One of my regrets is not learning to code. I was a whiz back when I was a kid on my Tandy TRS-80.
Pete. This site may help but there are many more

Ceit recently signed us up for a 3-D printing course - more of a 3D orientation really - offered by the public library. It seems they have acquired printers which can be used by members for a nominal fee. I now have a shiny plastic library card, something I haven't looked at for over a decade.
I will probably not use their printer for a number of reasons which I won't discuss. However, I did note they offer downloadable books and video courses that cover a wide variety of subjects including computer science. Anyone "in country" may want to check this out - the lynda.com courses, especially, are of interest.
Yes they do. They now need to be renewed yearly. There is a small charge to replace a lost current card (I think it's $5), otherwise it's free. They're fairly liberal with their identification requirements - a bill in an envelope and a credit card will suffice. As mentioned they are offering various courses or seminars which may be of interest to some, although for us they are fairly rudimentary.
Well folks have to begin somewhere. For me I am beginning again with a much different perspective of computer science than I did in the late 90's thanks to Scott. :)
I think you'll find the in-house courses are too rudimentary for most "folks". Here's a thought...why don't you start by removing the word "folks" from your vocabulary :P

People are ok. I like people. "Person" is a bit of a mine field...but people - another thing entirely. Use any words you like, but I RESERVE the RIGHT to mock your choices. Every time I hear the word "folks" I see the current US President rolling up his sleeves and preparing to screw the population.
