"would-be citizens are not actually swearing allegiance to the Queen herself as the reference to the Queen is symbolic of our form of government and the unwritten constitutional principle of democracy."

constitutional monarchy i.e., in a monarchy the state is personified, not treated as an abstraction or a corporation.[7][8][9] The Oath of Citizenship is today a legally binding oral and written contract intended to ensure that new Canadian citizenspromise to obey the laws and customs of their new country, fulfil their duties as citizens, and recognize the authority of the monarch as the personification of the state and various entities and concepts.[9][10] Its current form is as follows: I swear (or affirm) that I will be faithful and bear true allegiance to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, Queen of Canada, Her Heirs and Successors, and that I will faithfully observe the laws of Canada and fulfil my duties as a Canadian citizen.[11] http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oath_of_Citizenship_%28Canada%29#cite_note-PW-11

This article is fresh from Victoria BC. "Lisa Helps took office as Victorias 52nd mayor, the second woman to hold the job, and the first to wear the chain of office without swearing allegiance to the Crown. Helps says the oath that matters is to serve the community, and her decision stems from her support with local First Nations, whose history here extends farther than the British." http://www.cheknews.ca/new-victoria-mayor-eschews-oath-to-the-queen-chek-point/

I wonder how Scott Duncan would rewrite this oath to clarify it's contractual meanings and intentions. This should be interesting!... (rubbing my hands together in anticipation). o.O
