I save my wallet EVERYDAY, so I do not worry about these type of things, out though it never happened so far... :)

Its been on a flash drive sitting in my safe for months. Save as in back it up? No I haven't I had hoped it would be safe on this flash drive detached from the computer and locked away. Norton says the file in the message there is unsafe and removes it. I'm not super tech savvy so I don't know what to do!

Would my wallet still be there? I don't understand how that works. Sorry if these are stupid questions.

Your wallet should still be there, but I'm no expert either. I just remember someone else having issues with Doge and they were corrected with the latest version.

Also, always keep backup copies of your wallet! Luckily, the Admiral was able to rescue my wallet after my mining attempt crashed the Zotac. :p I have multiple backups now, just in case.

So do I backup the wallet elsewhere then update?

Copy it into MULTIPLE, SEPARATE, SECURE locations. I have 3 in different locations on the computer and the network attached storage, and keep an extra one on the SD card in my cell phone.

When in doubt, backup, then download. Does it matter, I'm not sure either. Better safe than sorry.

It is my understanding that you don't backup the actual wallet, only the keys to the wallet since the wallet is on the blockchain. Please correct me if I am mistaken.

The blockchain is just a record of transactions, your wallet is your own. If you lose it, you are S.O.L. (I know, I'm breaking the "no acronyms rule. Make that "Shit Outta Luck", then)

Ok so the wallet contains addresses and keys to those addresses. The blockchain contains every transaction since genesis thus the balance of each address. I stand corrected.

Last time I used windows, Avira was my choice for anti virus, firewall etc. Norton's what they push old ladies into at computer retail shops. I've only been on linux for a few years - my only regret is that I didn't change over sooner.
