There are many forms of Ubuntu. On the Admirals advice, I used a LTS (long term support) form of Ubuntu with the Xfce interface. 13.10 is beta and worked with the AMD driver package but would crash on launching cgminer. Ubuntu 12.04 (percise pangolin) with the Xfce interface worked first try, found the cards GPU's and joined the pool I directed.
