Click on the link and you see an MP3 file that can be played in your browser. He did not send that, he sent an EXECUTABLE file which will run in the security context of YOU. Like every idiot on the internet using windows, you will have ADMINISTRATIVE access, instead of using a locked-down USER account, so it runs AS AN ADMINISTRATOR and nothing will stop it. As i said: THERE IS NO LEGITIMATE REASON TO SEND AN EXECUTABLE FILE.

EXE files are WINDOWS SPECIFIC. They won't work on linux, and will bail if there is a WINE emulator on it, because WINE PRETENDS to be a windows machine, so the virus/trojan in the EXE file's payload will hit things that simply aren't there in WINE. APPLE and LINUX are IMMUNE... but apple machines have "backdoors" so trojans would be moot. Apple comes with malware PREINSTALLED.

Scott, I will field this one....first James Baal, you have to be reaaaalllllllly dumb with computers. Second, you have to get an email that you know nothing about, sidestep your antivirus software and download it. Third, you have to ask Scott to take a look at it because you can't figure it out. Fourth, you have to try to send said email to him...which is blocked by his gateway. So, if you are looking for instructions, there they are!

Scott, here is how I would send .exe files being a complete computer idiot. I would watch a video online. I would say "jeez....that was pretty good. I am going to download those." Then I download them and keep them on file for a long time. Then I get a virus that messes with my files and does something like this. Then someone asks me for them and I agree and send them completely oblivious to the .exe and what it means. I don't know if this is possible or probable..but with my novice experience I could see it happening. Thoughts?

I never sent a .exe file...... An executable file is a type of computer file that runs a program when it is opened. This means it executes code or a series of instructions contained in the file. The two primary types of executable files are 1) compiled programs and 2) scripts.

YES! Thank you David Johansen. This is a VERY old trick. SO old I always erroneously feel everyone is aware of the "old ones", ala; "Nobody stomps on a burning bag of shit anymore". I keep forgetting the obvious.

not "runs a program", IS an executable file. IS a program. a computer is a box of hardware that runs software programs. malware is malicious software code, and just like scott, the good stuff is available without charge. http://www.malwarebytes.org/ wont interfeer with your antivirous program. neither will housecall.trendmicro.com a decent free scanning tool. if you want, hijackthis, before norton got a hold of it, that i can send you. a really powerful program that allows you to rip things out otherwise difficult to delete. as for the email attachment, as long as you dont/didn't save and click it, if its just on a drive you can just delete it. Shift +Delete skips the recycle bin. note windows 7 and 8 are spying on you behind your back, you accepted it in the license agreement.

save all your important files duplicated externally. learn how to reformat & reinstall an operating system. keep a backup somewhere a warrant wouldnt get it, keep old parts. i talk from experience. 8-9 years ago they came and took everything, i eventually got it all back, but it took 8 months. i was only down for about 3 hours because there were parts they didnt take, only whole computers and drives, and disks i made. they left all the other stuff. yeah, the charge was extortion & tresspassing. had the ext. dismissed, plead to the tresspass...
