UN Convention on International Bills of Exchange and International Promissory Notes

New York, 1988

Uniform rules for international bills of exchange and promissory notes: how an instrument is made, transferred and paid, and the rights and liabilities of the drawer, acceptor, endorsers and guarantors.

The United Nations General Assembly adopted this convention in 1988. It applies only to an instrument that is headed “International bill of exchange (UNCITRAL Convention)” or “International promissory note (UNCITRAL Convention)”, so the parties choose its rules by how they write the instrument.

It is a companion to the Bills of Exchange page. The link opens the official text on the UNCITRAL website.
