The English Constitution

London: Kegan Paul, Trench, 1888

Bagehot's account of how English government actually works: the “dignified” parts that hold the public's loyalty, and the “efficient” parts that do the governing.

Walter Bagehot (1826–1877) first published The English Constitution as a book in 1867. He separates the constitution into its dignified parts, such as the monarchy, which win the public’s reverence and loyalty, and its efficient parts, mainly the Cabinet and the House of Commons, which actually govern.

This copy is the 1888 London edition. It was scanned from a University of Toronto library copy and is held by the Internet Archive. The book is in the public domain.
