Leviathan

London: J. M. Dent (Everyman's Library), 1914 · introduction by A. D. Lindsay

Hobbes's argument that without a common power people live in a war of all against all, and that they escape it by covenanting to give up their right to govern themselves to a sovereign: the Leviathan, or Commonwealth.

Thomas Hobbes (1588–1679) published Leviathan in 1651. Its four parts cover human nature (“Of Man”), the making of the state by covenant (“Of Commonwealth”), a Christian commonwealth, and what he calls the “Kingdom of Darkness”.
