UN Convention on the Carriage of Goods by Sea (the Hamburg Rules)
Hamburg, 1978
Sets the liability of a sea carrier for loss of, damage to, or delay in delivering the goods it carries, and what a bill of lading must contain.
The Hamburg Rules were adopted at Hamburg on 31 March 1978 and came into force on 1 November 1992. They govern contracts for carrying goods by sea between states, including the bill of lading, which is both the carrier’s receipt for the goods and the document of title used to transfer them.
